The Waitomo District Council provides a range of waste management services to the community including, kerbside refuse and recyclables collection, refuse bins, recycling and landfill facilities.

Waitomo District Council encourages every household to undertake recycling to reduce the amount of recyclable waste being buried in the landfill.

Refuse bag rules:

• Put bag(s) out by 8am on the correct day.
• Place bag at Kerbside not at gate.
• Wrap all sharp objects.
• Ensure the top of the bag is secured.
• Any number of Waitomo District Council Official bags may be left for collection.
• Extra bags may be purchased from New World Supermarket, Te Kuiti; Te Kuiti Foodmarket; Caveland Shop, Waitomo; Piopio Superette and Junction Service Station, Awakino.

Unofficial bags:

 Unofficial bags will not be collected

Just moved to the property - no refuse bags:

The official refuse bags are allocated to the property. When the owners or tenants change the previous property owner or tenant should leave remaining allocated refuse bags. Please contact the previous owner, Solicitor or Real estate agent if insufficient bags have not been left.  

Kerbside collection

 There is a Weekly collection of official rubbish bags:

• Piopio and Waitomo on Thursdays
• Mokau and Awakino on Mondays
• Te Kuiti on Fridays
• The Central Business Districts are collected on Fridays

All kerbside refuse must be out on the street by 8am on the correct day.

Recycling

Kerbside recycling:

• Any paper and cardboard (Must not contain food residue e.g. no fish and chip papers or pizza cartons.)
• Cans (Aluminium or tin to be separated.)
• Glass (Clean and not broken.)
• Plastics-bottles, soft drink, milk bottles. (These must be washed, squashed and the lids removed. Detergent bottles will not be accepted.)
• Circulars, magazines

All recyclables must be separated into separate shopping bags.

Recycle bins:

• Any paper and cardboard (Must not contain food residue e.g. no fish and chip papers or pizza cartons.)
• Cans (Aluminium or tin to be separated.)
• Plastics-bottles, soft drink, milk bottles. (These must be washed, squashed and the lids removed. Detergent bottles will not be accepted.)

All recyclables must be placed into the marked containers in the recycle bin.
