Water Conservation

Sustainability

The wasteful use of water has far reaching effects. Excess water usage translates into waste of energy and chemicals to produce water and unnecessary upgrades of treatment and reticulation assets required to deliver water. On the other side wasteful use of water contributes to costs associated with increased energy and other resources required to treat and dispose of waste water.

Getting the water to you – it’s not cheap and it’s not easy!

If you’re on Council supply, it’s easy to take treated water for granted. But it’s no easy task to extract water from a source, treat, and deliver it to you the customer. Council staff manage and operate treatment plants, storage reservoirs and distribution pipelines (networks), so when you turn on the tap the water is there, but it’s not an unlimited supply!

What can you do?

Waitomo District Council asks all residents on Council water supplies for their co-operation in conserving water use over the period November 2010 through to April 2011.

The Waitomo District could again experience a prolonged dry spell. Conservation and small changes made in terms of how we use water at home and work will make a big difference. Residential water use including garden watering, puts extra pressure on Council’s Water Supply systems especially when supply levels are at their lowest.

Conservation is about changing behaviour. A resource such as water that is readily available, can be taken for granted over time. All it takes is small changes to how water is used in the home and at work, to make a difference. See our Quick tips for simple ways to help reduce water use.
