Kiritehere Cemetery Ashes Wall

Seeking your feedback on the proposed Kiritehere Cemetery (Te Urupā o Kiritehere) Ashes Wall

What’s this all about?

The local community and whānau have proposed that the Council construct an ashes wall at the Kiritehere cemetery, allowing loved ones to be laid to rest closer to home.

The proposal is to build this from cinder block – 3 sections of 2m x 2m walls that could have up to 70 plots for ashes (see example image below on how this could look).

What feedback is Council seeking?

To better understand community interest, we’re seeking your feedback and thoughts on:

  1. Would you support the idea of an Ashes Wall being built at the Kiritehere cemetery?
  2. Is this a place where you and your family/whānau would consider resting in the future?
  3. Which location for the wall is most appropriate - A or B? (see plan below).
  4. What design features would you like to see in the ashes wall?

Why should you provide feedback?

Your input is invaluable in shaping this project for the community.

Your feedback will help Council determine the level of interest and then apply to the Director of Public Health to officially reopen the cemetery, which is currently designated as a closed burial ground.

What to do now.

Please share your feedback by 31 January 2025 using the form below.
alternatively you can email us or post your feedback to:
