Weather Watch - High wave warning along coastline

A high wave warning is in place for our coastline this weekend. A strong westerly swell is expected from Saturday 24 January through to Sunday 25 January, with a swell event (high energy waves) and elevated water levels predicted.

This wave event is big, even for the west coast, with forecast swell over 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres possible. The highest risk period is within 1-2 hours of high tide.

The next high tide for the coastline from Marokopa to Mōkau is around 2pm on Saturday. For Sunday, high tide is around 2.50pm.

Permanent recognition for Te Kūiti - Shearing Capital of the World

29 Mar 2023, 5:04 PM

A commemorative plaque will be unveiled at our iconic Shearing Statue tomorrow morning to further solidify Te Kūiti as the Shearing Capital of the World.

The unveiling will take place at 9am to mark the start of the New Zealand Shearing Championships, which has been part of Te Kūiti’s history for 37 years.

The plaque will be fixed to a special piece of limestone rock, provided by Te Kūiti legend Sir David Fagan.

Sir David and John Fagan will unveil the plaque together.

John Fagan’s input and drive was instrumental in the shearing statute being erected in 1994.

John was also the founding president of the NZ Shearing Championships committee and held that position for 10 years.

Sir David says this is a great way to permanently acknowledge the importance of Te Kūiti’s shearing history and is something that will be remembered in the years to come.

Those wishing to attend the unveiling are more than welcome to attend.

It will be held at the Shearing Statue on Rora Street at 9am on Thursday 30 March.
