Weather Watch - High wave warning along coastline

A high wave warning is in place for our coastline this weekend. A strong westerly swell is expected from Saturday 24 January through to Sunday 25 January, with a swell event (high energy waves) and elevated water levels predicted.

This wave event is big, even for the west coast, with forecast swell over 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres possible. The highest risk period is within 1-2 hours of high tide.

The next high tide for the coastline from Marokopa to Mōkau is around 2pm on Saturday. For Sunday, high tide is around 2.50pm.

Firsts for Waitomo District Council’s Elected Members

29 Oct 2025, 4:44 PM

History was made at Waitomo District Council on Tuesday when its new and returning Elected Members were officially sworn in.

The Council welcomed its youngest elected representative, Isaiah Wallace, aged 30.

And what makes his appointment more special, was that Isaiah’s leadership journey began on the Waitomo District Youth Council where he decided that one day he would run for Council. That time is now.

Councillor Wallace brings experience in community service, cultural leadership, and working alongside hapu, rangatahi, and local organisations.

“My focus is on achieving positive outcomes for our people through integrity, inclusion, and action. I am committed to advocating for better services, stronger local representation, and future planning that supports our community’s growth and wellbeing.”

Also joining the Council for the first time is local farmer Olivia Buckley, who will bring fresh perspectives to Council’s strategic planning and decision-making processes. She is enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve the community.

Mayor John Robertson was also sworn in for a third term, alongside returning Councillors Eady Manawaiti, Allan Goddard, Janette Osborne and Dan Tasker.

“I thank the public for their vote of confidence. While I will take on the responsibility of leadership, it is us together who will make this Council successful – it is a team effort,” says John.

Councillor Manawaiti was also appointed Deputy Mayor and will be the district’s first Māori Deputy Mayor.

Over the past three years Eady has headed our Māori Relations Committee – Te Raangai Whakakaupapa Koorero - a standing Committee that we created to attend to matters of importance to Māori.  It is still developing its form, but already has proved its value, as has Eady’s dedication and leadership,” says John.

Councillor Manawaiti says he is humbled by the appointment.

“I want to acknowledge Councillor Goddard as previous Deputy Mayor, and for his generosity in the way he shared his knowledge to us as new Councillors last term,” says Eady.

“I was honoured to have been offered the role by Mayor Robertson and am extremely humbled by the kind words of support.”

Councillor Goddard was also acknowledged for his long service. He first became a Councillor in 2010 and this triennium will be his sixth term.
