Postponement again of official opening and blessing of the Mangaokewa Walkway Cultural Storyboards

Waitomo District Council, with the support of Ngāti Rōrā, have made a call to POSTPONE the official opening and blessing of the Mangaokewa Walkway Cultural Storyboards for the second time. This is due to the heavy rain forecast for the rest of the week. The ground will be wet and the weather looks worse for Friday (26 September 2025). It's important to us that this significant occasion is done correctly. We will schedule another blessing to be held later in the year when the weather has improved.

We thank you again for your understanding and support.

Road Closure - SH3 and SH30 from 6 October

5 Oct 2022, 10:14 AM

A road closure and detour will be in place at the intersection of State Highway 3 and State Highway 30 from tomorrow - 6 October and Friday 7 October and either Monday 10 October or Tuesday 11 October.

The detour will be in place for the completion of the pedestrian upgrade to the entrance of Te Kūiti Pa, making it safer for pedestrians to cross State Highway 3 Awakino Road. It will only be in place when work is happening on site, and it will be removed for the weekend.

To keep site staff and motorists safe, State Highway 3 Awakino Road will be closed from the intersection of State Highway 30 to the intersection with Waitete Road and Rora Street. Traffic will be detoured northward along either State Highway 3 Carroll Street (if west of the railway lines) or Rora Street (if east of the railway lines) to the nearest rail crossing at Ward Street. Pedestrians and cyclists can cross the railway lines using the Te Ara Tika overbridge.

The road will be reinstated with an asphalt surface around the new pedestrian refuges this week, followed by line marking next week.
