Water alerts and water restrictions

17 Dec 2010, 10:21 AM

Like many Districts in the North Island, Waitomo is experiencing an exceptionally dry summer and there is no clear indication when it will change. Summer is also the period when very high water demand is experienced under normal circumstances. Council water supply schemes in Waitomo have only one source of water each, which makes it even more vital that we conserve water where-ever possible.

The combination of high water use and low river levels means that water restrictions may be put in place. Therefore residents in all Waitomo District communities on Council water supplies are urged to conserve water to prevent serious water restrictions from becoming a necessity.

From December 21st 2010, we are all on Alert Level 1. This means that although there are no restrictions in place, it is very important that we all save water to reduce the risk of running out.

Water alerts and water restrictions will be published on our website www.waitomo.govt.nz, and by way of public notice in the Waitomo News. We will keep you informed of the situation as the need for water restrictions developes.

Thank you for your cooperation.
