Fire in refuse tip at Waitomo District Landfill

21 Oct 2016, 11:18 AM

Te Kuiti Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a fire in the refuse tip at the Waitomo District Landfill this morning. The ignition source of the fire is unknown at this time. It could be from hot embers from a domestic fire disposed as rubbish or could be a result of a laptop battery exploding.

Waitomo District Council are currently working to locate the seat of the fire and to fully extinguish it. This involves excavating the rubbish at the tip head and spreading the surrounding rubbish material out so that we can extinguish the source of the fire. There is no danger to users of the Transfer Station, but there will be an unpleasant odour as a result of the fire, for a short period of time.
