Weather Watch - High wave warning along coastline

A high wave warning is in place for our coastline this weekend. A strong westerly swell is expected from Saturday 24 January through to Sunday 25 January, with a swell event (high energy waves) and elevated water levels predicted.

This wave event is big, even for the west coast, with forecast swell over 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres possible. The highest risk period is within 1-2 hours of high tide.

The next high tide for the coastline from Marokopa to Mōkau is around 2pm on Saturday. For Sunday, high tide is around 2.50pm.

Alert Level 2 changes to service

12 Aug 2020, 12:00 PM

Waitomo District Council (WDC) has actioned its COVID-19 Alert level 2 response, which came into effect at midday today.

WDC’s response is similar to what was in place when the country was at level 2 earlier in the year.

Chris Ryan, Chief Executive says, “we were well prepared and ready to take action when the government made its announcement on Tuesday evening.”

At alert level 2 WDC has made temporary changes to its services.

Kerbside collection, including recycling will continue. Transfer stations will remain open, but at reduced hours.

“At all alert levels the highest number of queries we received was about rubbish collection and our transfer stations. We know it’s an important service for our community and one which will continue during level 2.”

Other temporary changes include reduced hours for WDC’s customer service team and library.  The Te Kuiti i-SITE has closed. Parks, playgrounds and public toilets remain open.

These changes will remain in place for the duration of level 2.  WDC will continue to keep the community up to date with any changes via social media and its website.
