Weather Watch - High wave warning along coastline

A high wave warning is in place for our coastline this weekend. A strong westerly swell is expected from Saturday 24 January through to Sunday 25 January, with a swell event (high energy waves) and elevated water levels predicted.

This wave event is big, even for the west coast, with forecast swell over 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres possible. The highest risk period is within 1-2 hours of high tide.

The next high tide for the coastline from Marokopa to Mōkau is around 2pm on Saturday. For Sunday, high tide is around 2.50pm.

Infrastructure upgrades on track for Mokau community

Mokau water supply upgrade

A project to improve the water quality in Mokau is nearing completion, with the upgraded Water Treatment Plant due to be commissioned in the New Year.

An upgrade is necessary to improve the performance of the filtration unit, increase operational resilience and provide on-line monitoring and reporting, which is required for drinking water compliance and ultimately results in better water quality for Mokau residents.

To date, design work has been finalised and installation is part complete. Unfortunately, the supply of parts needed to complete the upgrade has been delayed due to COVID lockdown restrictions.

Commissioning is scheduled for early next year, however in meantime, water is still fully treated, including coagulation, filtration, ultraviolet and chlorine disinfection.

New Mokau Toilet Block

A new toilet block has been planned to duplicate the capacity of existing toilets in Mokau.

Land has been acquired, and the investigation and design also completed.

Construction is scheduled for New Year, starting with refurbishment of the existing
effluent disposal system.

Supplementary temporary toilets will also be provided for the peak summer holiday period.
