Cool Kids Compost Competition

Kids, get your composting brains into action – this one’s for you!

Composting is a fun hands-on science activity to do at home. By composting, you’ll learn about the three environmental Rs (reduce, recycle, and reuse), what items are biodegradable, the importance of worms & insects, and heaps more.

The 5 main benefits of composting:

  1. Composting reduces waste, making us less dependent on landfills. Many items that would usually be thrown away can be composted instead.
  2. Compost can be added to gardens to enrich the soil. This reduces the need to buy synthetic fertilizers.
  3. Plants grown in compost-rich soil tend to be more resistant to diseases and pests. This reduces the need for pesticides that may contain harmful chemicals.
  4. Compost attracts worms and microorganisms that are good for soil and plants. These organisms break down matter, improve soil structure, and help create a fertile environment for plants.
  5. Composting helps conserve water. This is because adding organic matter to soil increases its water-retaining abilities.

 

Competition | What to do:

Show us your best ideas for composting around your home – get creative!

For example, it could be a:

  • ‘How to Compost’ poster for your family – keep it on the fridge,
  • an actual compost project you design from items you find around your home (check out websites for loads of cool ideas)
  • design a compost boardgame
  • or even build your own worm farm!

Competition is open to: Ages 5 - 12 years
