Postponement again of official opening and blessing of the Mangaokewa Walkway Cultural Storyboards

Waitomo District Council, with the support of Ngāti Rōrā, have made a call to POSTPONE the official opening and blessing of the Mangaokewa Walkway Cultural Storyboards for the second time. This is due to the heavy rain forecast for the rest of the week. The ground will be wet and the weather looks worse for Friday (26 September 2025). It's important to us that this significant occasion is done correctly. We will schedule another blessing to be held later in the year when the weather has improved.

We thank you again for your understanding and support.

Road repairs to start on Kawhia Harbour Road

29 Jun 2025, 10:23 AM

Work will start next week to repair and upgrade a section of Kawhia Harbour Road in the Waitomo district.

The upgrades are in response to previous storm damage in 2023 where the road was damaged and in some locations, reduced to one lane.

Works will be undertaken by Inframax Construction Ltd and will include pavement (road) reinstatement and a timber retaining wall to protect against further damage in case of future weather events.

Work is expected to take about six to eight weeks to complete and a road closure will be in place. During weekdays the section of the Kawhia Harbour Road will be closed to through traffic to allow the works to be carried out safely. However every 50 minutes, the road will be open for 10 minutes to allow vehicles to pass through the site.

Hours of road closure are 8am to 5pm, opening every 50 minutes for 10 mins eg. 8.50am, 9.50am etc

Outside of working hours, normal access will be restored.

Work will start on Monday 30 June weather dependent. The overall completion for the site is end of August 2025.
