Postponement again of official opening and blessing of the Mangaokewa Walkway Cultural Storyboards

Waitomo District Council, with the support of Ngāti Rōrā, have made a call to POSTPONE the official opening and blessing of the Mangaokewa Walkway Cultural Storyboards for the second time. This is due to the heavy rain forecast for the rest of the week. The ground will be wet and the weather looks worse for Friday (26 September 2025). It's important to us that this significant occasion is done correctly. We will schedule another blessing to be held later in the year when the weather has improved.

We thank you again for your understanding and support.

Te Kūiti Holiday Park to close

29 May 2025, 8:25 AM

The Te Kūiti Holiday Park on Te Kumi Road in Te Kūiti will soon close to the public.

The decision to close the facility was determined at Waitomo District Council’s monthly council meeting on Tuesday 27 May.

Following a short period of online engagement, Mayor John Robertson outlined in his report to Council on Tuesday, that he favoured closing the facility to save ratepayer funds.

The majority of the Elected Members supported a resolution by Mayor Robertson to close the
Te Kūiti Holiday Park after feedback from the community. The dump station will remain operational.

The facility costs about $45,000 a year to maintain and operate, and with revenue around $13,000, ratepayers are contributing about $30,000 towards the cost.

Use of the park is low and only a few visitors take their vehicles into the park, with most choosing to park in free parking areas, including by the Shearing Statue and across from The Warehouse.

Chief Executive Ben Smit says there is potential to relocate the bathroom and kitchen facilities to the Marokopa Holiday Park to replace aging facilities there, however further discussions will need to take place first.

“At this stage we don’t have a set date for the closure of Te Kūiti Holiday Park, but we will let the community know when this will happen.”
