Waitomo District residents and members of the public have an opportunity to pass on their condolences for the Right Honourable Jim Bolger ONZ PC, who passed away on Wednesday 15 October.
A condolence book is available at Council’s Customer Services and Visitor Hub on Rora Street for those who wish to pass on their memories and sympathies to the family.
A proud Te Kūiti farmer and one of our best New Zealanders, Rt. Hon. Jim Bolger was a towering figure in New Zealand politics both in his role as Prime Minister, and as the Member of Parliament for King Country for more than two decades. He touched many lives through his decades of public service.
Mayor John Robertson noted Rt. Hon. Jim Bolger’s 25 years of service as the Member of Parliament representing the King Country Electorate.
“Even when he served as Prime Minister, Jim Bolger was a “local” in the real sense of the word. He was always accessible, with his electorate office in the main street of Te Kūiti,” says John.
“He was a politician and a diplomat for many years, but he was grounded through his rural roots and farming background.
“I served under him when he first became Prime Minister in 1990. I saw his energy and leadership. I saw him work across the House, enjoying the support and respect of all from both sides of the House, including his friend from Te Kūiti, Hon. Koro Wetere.”
Jim was an advocate of MMP and led the first coalition Government with NZ First.
His achievements included Treaty settlements, the first being with Waikato Tainui where he worked alongside Sir Robert Mahuta, followed soon after with Ngai Tahu led by Sir Tipene O’Regan.
“It is fitting that we pay our respects locally. He represented King Country well and went on to become Prime Minister of New Zealand,” says John.
“We recognise his life fittingly alongside those of five others on Pou in Rora Street, Te Kūiti.”
