The Waitomo District community turned out in force to rediscover one of the district's most important venues at the recent Les Munro Centre (LMC) Open Day.

Visitors enjoyed the opportunity to explore the large event centre, take part in more than a dozen different activities, learn more about what the LMC has to offer, and imagine would it could look like with redesigned spaces.

The event was designed to reconnect residents, showcasing the LMC’s versatile spaces, and seek ideas on how Council can breathe new life into the venue.

A youth centre, cinema, maker spaces and a monthly market were just some of the ideas that were shared at the community event.

Waitomo District Mayor John Robertson says the strong turnout demonstrated the community's appreciation for the venue and the important role it plays within the district.

He says the open day provided a chance for both new and familiar faces to take a closer look at the venue, explore what the library has to offer, and discover the wide range of possibilities for the future.

“It was pleasing to see so many people attend the open day as it highlighted the important role the LMC continues to play in bringing people together.

“We want that to continue for many years. We don’t want the LMC to sit empty for large chunks of the year, so it’s important we explore how it could better serve our district as well as looking at ways we can reduce its ongoing cost to ratepayers.”

For many years, the LMC has served as the heart of countless major events, community gatherings, celebrations, functions and special occasions.

The success of the open day highlights the community's ongoing connection to the venue and has generated renewed interest in the many ways the LMC can retain its use as an event centre but breathing new life into it as a community space that is used every day rather than on occasion.

“The positive feedback we received throughout the day shows there is strong interest in making the most of this valuable community asset,” says John.

Feedback welcome

There is still time for people to share their thoughts and ideas on the future of the LMC.

Feedback will help Council understand what the community needs and will inform the development of a proposed concept design.
