SH3 remains closed
Update - 19 April 2026 at 2.30pm:
SH3 between Mōkau and Piopio will remain CLOSED overnight and until further notice due to significant damage caused by heavy rainfall this weekend. There are multiple large slips in the area, and crews are working hard to keep road users safe and clear the road as quickly as possible. SH43 between Whangamomona and Taumarunui will also remain CLOSED overnight due to flooding.
Waitomo District Roading Updates
We are aware that a number of roads in the Mōkau, Awakino and Mahoenui areas have been affected by the recent weather events. Due to the closure of State Highway 3 south of Piopio, our roading crews have been unable to access parts of the network. We are aiming to have crews on site tomorrow, subject to access being restored.

No kerbside collection for Mōkau and Awakino
Due to the closure of SH3 as a result of flooding and slips, kerbside collection will not go ahead in Mōkau and Awakino on Monday 20 April 2026.
