Waitomo District Council
On 25 September 2024, the Waitomo District Council gave public notice of its final proposal for representation arrangements to apply for the Council elections to be held on 11 October 2025.
Notification of the right to appeal or object was also given. No appeals or objections were received in respect of the resolution. Therefore, the representation arrangements for the Waitomo District Council’s 2025 local elections will be the same as in the final proposal, which is set out below:
Council Representation
Council continues to comprise of six members elected from two wards, and the Mayor elected at large.
The two wards reflect the urban and rural communities of interest and are called the Te Kūiti Ward and the Waitomo Rural Ward.
The population that each member will represent is as follows:
Ward | Population | Members* | Population/Member |
Waitomo Rural | 5,100 | 3 | 1,700 |
Te Kūiti | 4,620 | 3 | 1,540 |
9,720 | 6 | 1,620 |
* The populations used are the estimated resident population as at 30 June 2023 provided by Statistics NZ. They use the 2018 census as their base.
In accordance with section 19V (2) of the Local Electoral Act 2001 the population that each member represents must be within the range of 1,620 +/- 10% (that is 1458 to 1782), unless particular communities of interest considerations justify otherwise. Both wards fall within this range.
