Dog Control Bylaw and Policy review 2025
1 May 2025, 9:00 AM
Waitomo District Council is seeking feedback on the Draft Dog Control Bylaw and Draft Dog Control Policy to meet the requirements of the Local Government Act 2002 (LGA 2002) and the Dog Control Act 1996 (the DCA 1996).
Under the DCA 1996, the Council must maintain a policy for the purposes of dog control within the district, and can adopt a bylaw supporting the policy which enables enforcement of the regulations that help manage public safety.
The Waitomo District Council Dog Control Bylaw and Dog Control Policy were last reviewed in 2015. Council is required to review the existing Bylaw every 10 years. This review provides an opportunity to consider if any changes are needed and check in with the community about dog control in our district.
Changes we're proposing:
- Updating and clarifying the permit and special owner clauses
- Making Ward Street Reserve an on-leash area only
- Making the whole of Centennial Park a prohibited dog area
Key dates:
Submissions open: 1 May 2025
Submissions close: 31 May 2025
We want to hear from you! The proposed changes are not yet finalised, and your feedback is crucial in helping us make the best decision for our district.
