Severe thunderstorm warning - Thursday 3 July 2025
Alongside the heat and humidity, we are also expecting a severe thunderstorm.
Metservice has issued a RED severe thunderstorm warning for parts of our district this evening.
Metservice weather radar detected a line of severe thunderstorms that are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain.
Impact: Very heavy rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
Take some time now to get prepared ahead of worst weather setting in.
Take care while out and about and drive safely and to the conditions.

Water Restriction update for Waitomo district

10 Feb 2020, 11:30 AM

We are experiencing a prolonged period of dry weather with a lack of rainfall predicted over the coming weeks.  Water restrictions are now in place and we ask residents to be very careful with their water use.

Mokau is now on Water Restriction Level 3

Take all practical steps to reduce your water usage.

  • No sprinklers allowed.
  • Hand-held hosing only.

Don’t use Council water supply to fill or top up your pools (including portable and paddling pools).

Use a broom instead of water to clean hard surfaces such as footpaths and driveways.

Avoid using water to wash windows, buildings and cars.

Te Kuiti, Piopio and Benneydale water supplies are now on Water Restriction Level 2

Reduce non-essential water use.

  • Use sprinklers on alternate days between 6-8am and 6-8pm (e.g. even street numbers on even days; odd street numbers on odd days).
  • Hand held hosing is allowed at anytime.
