Weather Watch - High wave warning along coastline

A high wave warning is in place for our coastline this weekend. A strong westerly swell is expected from Saturday 24 January through to Sunday 25 January, with a swell event (high energy waves) and elevated water levels predicted.

This wave event is big, even for the west coast, with forecast swell over 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres possible. The highest risk period is within 1-2 hours of high tide.

The next high tide for the coastline from Marokopa to Mōkau is around 2pm on Saturday. For Sunday, high tide is around 2.50pm.

View Terrace to open next month

28 Apr 2023, 4:41 PM

After months of construction, View Terrace in Piopio will reopen in May.

This project has been challenging, but a great feat with roading crews working through the storm damage based on criticality, priority and funding limitations.

View Terrace was one of several local roads severely impacted by Cyclone Dovi in February 2022 and was further impacted again by the Auckland Anniversary Storm earlier this year.

Urgent repair was critical, and the road has now been strengthened with a Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) Wall.

General Manager Infrastructure Services, Shyamal Ram says he is pleased with the outcome.

“We would like to thank the residents of View Terrace in particular for their patience.

“When another storm forced us to close the road, the local residents pulled together and allowed us access to and from their properties. An amazing showing of community spirit.”

Minor works will still take place after the road is re-opened.
