Weather Watch - High wave warning along coastline

A high wave warning is in place for our coastline this weekend. A strong westerly swell is expected from Saturday 24 January through to Sunday 25 January, with a swell event (high energy waves) and elevated water levels predicted.

This wave event is big, even for the west coast, with forecast swell over 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres possible. The highest risk period is within 1-2 hours of high tide.

The next high tide for the coastline from Marokopa to Mōkau is around 2pm on Saturday. For Sunday, high tide is around 2.50pm.

Truck parks create improved parking zones in Mōkau

26 Sep 2023, 11:06 AM

Trucks will soon be able to safely park in Mōkau thanks to a Waitomo District Council project that aims to create improved parking zones in the seaside town.

Council contractor Camex Civil is currently installing truck parks on both sides of Mōkau’s main road, which will enable up to three trucks to safely park off the road.

Four additional carparks will also be added, which completes another stage of amenity improvements following the construction of a new toilet block in Mōkau in November 2022.

General Manager Infrastructure Services, Shyamal Ram says the project is great news for the Mōkau community as parking has been an issue for some time.

“The programme of works is about ensuring safety measures are in place for those wishing to stop and enjoy the town.”

The project is fully funded by WDC and expected to be completed in November.
