Water conservation over Summer

8 Dec 2014, 1:10 PM

Council's Water services staff take regular readings of total water production and of sample meters located on properties across the District.

Results of these readings show that the demand on the district water supplies is relatively low and no issues can be foreseen at this time.

During spring, summer and long periods of low rainfall, there is less water available to treat.

Residential water use including garden watering puts extra pressure on Council’s Water Systems when supplies are at their lowest.

Conservation and small changes made in behaviour in terms of how we use water in the home and at work will make a big difference.

Your support in conserving water use will help to prevent the need for any restrictions being placed on the supply.  By using water responsibly there will be plenty of water available for all.

The following levels of water restrictions have been set for Waitomo District water supplies. All communities are currently on Level 1.

Level 1

Conservation

  • Use sprinklers between 6-8am and 6-8pm.
  • Hand-held hosing is allowed anytime.

Level 2

Restrictions

  • Use sprinklers on alternate days between 6-8am and 6-8pm. This means if your street address is an even number you can use water on even dates of the month only i.e 8 Smith Street, can use a sprinkler or irrigation system on the 4th, 6th, 12th etc.
  • Hand held hosing is allowed at anytime.

Level 3

Restrictions

  • No sprinklers allowed. Hand-held hosing only.

Level 4

Water critically low

  • No outside use of non-essential water systems allowed (washing cars, filling of swimming pools etc).
