Vandalism of Centennial Park sports field

17 May 2016, 5:14 PM

Following on from recent media coverage on the vandalism on Centennial Sportsfield, Waitomo District Council wishes to clarify its position.

To eliminate the risk of injury to the public WDC closed the grandstand side (Park Street) of Centennial Park sportsfield after it was significantly vandalised by vehicles two weeks ago.

Parklands Turf was hired to repair the damage to the playing surface. The sportsfield in question will remain closed to the public for up to 6 weeks in order to allow the playing surface to be fully restored to a condition that is considered safe for use.

The playing surface will be assessed again at the end of the six week period.

Measures will be taken to deter to this type of negative behaviour. The installation of bollards is one of the options being considered.

Our aim is to restore the sportsfield condition, and to identify ways to address the issues that we are experiencing with vandalism in our community.

We will keep you informed of any decisions made.
