Candidate information sessions scheduled for upcoming elections

9 Jul 2019

Find out more about standing as a candidate in the 2019 Local Government Elections.

People interested in finding out more about standing as a Waitomo District Council (WDC) election candidate are encouraged to come along to our candidate information sessions where we will provide information around the nomination process, campaigning, time commitments and legislation that is applicable during the election process, as well as what they could expect if they are successful at the election.

WDC encourages anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to stand.  Local government and local democracy are fundamental to our community and provide the opportunity for everyone’s voice to be heard.

The information sessions will be held on the following dates, at the WDC Office on Queen Street, Te Kuiti:

  • 12 July 2019 at 7am: Meet the Chief Executive Officer and learn more about being a councillor or mayor.
  • 18 July 2019 at 6pm: Workshop with the Electoral Officer to learn more about the nomination and election processes and the roles of council and elected members.

Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the parliamentary roll.

Nominations for candidates for the position of mayor and councillors at Waitomo District Council open on 19 July 2019 and close at noon on 16 August 2019.
