Slip on Te Waitere Road – please drive safe

Council is aware of a significant slip on Te Waitere Road. Currently the road is down to one lane with priority give way traffic control in place. Given there is poor weather forecast towards the end of the week, we encourage those needing to pass through this site to be vigilant and drive safely and to the conditions.

Te Anga Road construction projects underway

Despite a rocky start to the construction works, a project to stabilise and renew a section of Te Anga Road is well underway.

Last week Council contractor Nicholls and Uttinger Civil Limited began the reinstatement of a part of the road that was extensively damaged as a result of a January 2023 storm event.

However due to safety concerns, the contractor undertook an urgent road closure for two days last week to ensure it was stable enough to take vehicles and machinery during construction.

Works will take about seven weeks and includes construction of a block retaining wall to help reinstate the two lanes, as well as drainage improvements. The final surface will be chipseal.

General Manager Infrastructure Services, Shyamal Rams says so far, the team have completed the bulk excavations for wall foundations and made a start on the drainage upgrades.

Large trees that were at a risk of falling onto the road have also been removed.

Shyamal says it’s sometimes hard to determine how extensive a road can be damaged during storms, and Nicholls and Uttinger Civil Limited made the right call in closing Te Anga Road last week.

“Safety is always paramount for our community and workers.”

Council contractor Splice Construction are also undertaking work on a separate section of Te Anga Road which was damaged during another storm event. The pavement and sealing works are completed with just some minor finishing works remaining.
