Weather Watch - High wave warning along coastline

A high wave warning is in place for our coastline this weekend. A strong westerly swell is expected from Saturday 24 January through to Sunday 25 January, with a swell event (high energy waves) and elevated water levels predicted.

This wave event is big, even for the west coast, with forecast swell over 5 metres and maximum wave height over 10 metres possible. The highest risk period is within 1-2 hours of high tide.

The next high tide for the coastline from Marokopa to Mōkau is around 2pm on Saturday. For Sunday, high tide is around 2.50pm.

Our building consents are going digital

9 Dec 2019

Waitomo District Council’s (WDC) new electronic system will see builders and designers applying for and finalising their building consents completely online.

WDC has announced it will move to an online building consent processing system from February 2020. The system, provided by New Zealand Company AlphaOne, will enable customers to submit building consents online, track their consents and receive all correspondence digitally.

Strategy and Environment General Manager Terrena Kelly said the new system is an exciting change for both our customers and staff.

“Traditionally we've used a paper-based system for processing building consents, which is time-consuming and difficult for users and not environmentally friendly. Our new system will be more efficient and will provide a better service for our customers.” Says Ms Kelly.

Council staff are engaging with regular customers to ensure they understand the new electronic system.

The go live date will be announced in the New Year and building consents can then be applied for online. Council will not accept paper-based consent applications after this date, however, opportunities for training in the new system will be offered to customers.

Those with an existing building consent underway will continue to have their consent processed using the current paper-based system until it is complete.
