Please hold off posting your “free to a good home” messages on Facebook
14 Apr 2020, 11:36 AM
There is no doubt we live in caring, generous communities.
But it appears that some generous members of our communities have resumed posting ‘free to a good home’ messages on local Facebook groups, offering items such as winter blankets, clothing, baby items and surplus fruit from their trees.
While Western Waikato Emergency Operating Centre Controller Dave Simes appreciates the kindness behind these gestures, such goodwill still poses an unintentional risk to our communities of spreading COVID-19.
“We are still in level 4 lockdown and COVID-19 is present in all Western Waikato communities.
“I ask that everyone, including administrators of these groups please stop authorising such posts.”
People requiring assistance are reminded to use the official channels to ask for help.
- Waikato Welfare Call Centre 0800 800 405 for advice and assistance.
- Work and Income 0800 559 009 for financial assistance, including assistance for clothing and winter heating.
Calls into the Waikato Welfare Call Centre are assessed on their needs and allocated to the local welfare teams to connect with authorised volunteer buddies.
Stay kind, be considerate
