Name? Julie O’Toole

Job title? District Librarian

How long have you worked in the library (as of Aug 2026)? Nearly 16 years. My library journey began while I was working in Customer Services at Council. I started by working Saturday mornings in the library and filling in during the week when required. What started as a part-time opportunity grew into a full-time career (which I love), and I've now spent around 14-15 years working in the library full-time.

Favourite part of your job? Knowing that the work we do daily has a positive impact on the community and I love that we get to interact with people from all walks of life in the one space.

Favourite Genre? I honestly don’t have one. I find that different genres appeal to me at different times, and I find so many more interesting reads but being more open in my choices.

If you could live in any fictional world, which would it be? That’s a difficult question. If you’d asked me as a child, I would have immediately said Narnia. As an adult, though, I think I’d like to mix things up a bit. Rather than choosing just one fictional world, I’d love the ability to jump in and out of all of them, exploring different places, meeting memorable characters, and experiencing the unique adventures each world has to offer. Why limit yourself to one when there are so many incredible worlds to discover?

Superpower you would choose and why? The ability to slow down time. Some days seem to disappear in the blink of an eye, and it can feel impossible to fit everything in. Having the ability to slow time would create space for better balance in life. More time with the people we care about, more time for self-reflection, more time to enjoy nature, and still have time for work, household responsibilities, reading and everything else that fills our days. It would be a superpower that allows me to be more present and make the most of every moment.

How long have you worked in the library (as of Aug 2026)? 3 years & 8 months - I was covering the lunch breaks in the library as I worked in Customer Services, and the opportunity to work full time in the library became available so I applied.

Favourite part of your job? Seeing and hearing the appreciation from customers when we help them.

Favourite Genre? Mystery Humorous Fiction as I am enjoying the author Janet Evanovich with the series of Stephanie Plum the bounty hunter. But my favourite that I have read would be The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

If you could live in any fictional world, which would it be?  Pandora because of the glowing bioluminescence forests, plants and creatures with floating Hallelujah Mountains.

Superpower you would choose and why? Language mastery it would be great to have the ability to instantly speak or sign, and understand all human language anywhere and everywhere.

How long have you worked in the library (as of Aug 2026)? I have been working at the library for 1 year.

Favourite part of your job? I enjoy helping people and making a positive difference in their day. I also love being involved in children's programmes and events, watching children have fun and discover new things.

Favourite Genre? I would have to choose mystery and thriller books. There's always an element of surprise, and I enjoy being kept guessing until the very end.

If you could live in any fictional world, which would it be? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would be my dream fictional world. With my sweet tooth, I'd love being able to enjoy all the chocolate and sweets I could imagine.

Superpower you would choose and why? If I could have any superpower, it would be teleportation. I'd love the freedom of being able to travel anywhere at any time with just the blink of an eye.
