SH3 remains closed

Update - 20 April 2026 at 6.20pm:

SH3 between Mōkau and Piopio will remain CLOSED until further notice due to significant damage caused by heavy rainfall this weekend.  There are multiple large slips in the area, and crews are working hard to keep road users safe and clear the road as quickly as possible. It is expected the road will be closed for several days. SH43 between Whangamomona and Taumarunui will also remain CLOSED..

Waitomo District Roading Updates

We are aware that a number of roads in the Mōkau, Awakino and Mahoenui areas have been affected by the recent weather events. Due to the closure of State Highway 3 south of Piopio, our roading crews have been unable to access parts of the network. We are aiming to have crews on site tomorrow, subject to access being restored.

Visit our road network updates page for the list of roads and more info
